UF’s SEEM Partners with FATS to Develop Firearms Training Courseware
8/26/2006
Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay’s School of Environmental and Emergency Management (SEEM) has partnered with Fire Arms Training Systems Inc. (FATS), a subsidiary of Firearms Training Systems Inc., to produce a series of Judgmental/Use of Force video scenario training DVDs, called the "Silver Series". The intent of the Silver Series is to expand the FATS library of scenarios and provide a cost-effective option to the law enforcement and security markets.

The first DVD in the "silver" series, "Officer Survival Disc 1," contains 6 interactive law enforcement scenarios that require officers to think, act and communicate simultaneously while reacting to high-pressure or life-threatening situations. FATS and SEEM have worked together to develop and film scenarios that are designed to train officers to react decisively and effectively to situations that they could realistically encounter in the line of duty. These scenarios provide instructors with a way to measure officers’ skills and determine how each officer would likely respond in that situation.

The FATS system is a cost-effective solution for marksmanship, decision-making and communication skills training. It tests responder reaction to simulated, yet realistic, situations. Law enforcement and security officers trained on the FATS system gain skills that improve their response to real-life incidents, enabling them to defuse or de-escalate confrontations and potentially eliminating the need to use force.

The new video training scenario DVDs can be purchased for $950 from Fats Inc. at www.fatsinc.com. You can also preview one of the scenarios on this Website.

"Officer Survival Disc 2" will be released soon. It will be followed by "VA Hospital Security" and "Nuclear Station Security."

Earlier this year, SEEM announced a formal partnership with FATS. In addition to the Silver Series, SEEM and FATS will also examine other opportunities to combine their expertise to better serve the video scenario training needs of existing and potential markets.

Since 1986, the School of Environmental and Emergency Management has provided education, training and information-transfer programs focusing on environmental, safety and occupational health issues as well as security management, terrorism and disaster preparedness. In 2005, SEEM trained 8,400 people at 166 locations in 38 states and four foreign countries. For more information, visit seem.findlay.edu
