AWR 147: Rail Car Incident Response is an 8-hour awareness level training program designed to educate rural emergency responders on freight rail car incidents involving hazardous materials. Through this course participants will gain an understanding of potential hazards at a train derailment, properties of specific chemicals, and various incident confinement and containment strategies. Upon completion of this course, participants will be better prepared to respond to a freight rail car incident without endangering the health and safety of the responders and minimizing the impact to the community and environment.
Topics to be discussed during the course include:
- Application of the D.E.C.I.D.E decision making process
- Characteristics of the rail/freight industry
- Key regulations regarding rail car incidents
- Characteristics of the design, construction, components, and markings of rail tank cars
- Basic chemical terminology pertinent to freight rail car incidents
- Application of the Incident Command System (ICS) in freight rail car incidents
- Types of damage to rail cars and the potential hazards to people, property, and environment
- Review of specific freight rail car incident case studies
Who Should Attend
The primary audience for AWR 147 includes: fire service, emergency medical services, law enforcement, emergency management, local emergency planners (including industry), public safety, hazardous materials, and private rail companies.
DHS Approval Means Free Training for Qualified Jurisdictions
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved the AWR 147 course which allows each participant to receive a Certificate of Completion. In addition, DHS approval means that AWR 147 can be delivered tuition free to qualified jurisdictions.
