The purpose of this training is to equip employees who work for TV and Radio broadcast businesses, such as reporters, cameramen, sound technicians, and any others identified by the client, with the ability to respond to, and report on, disasters (both man-made and natural) in as safe a manner as possible.
This training primarily focuses on the following:
- How media personnel should evaluate a disaster situation upon arrival at the scene
- How to recognize existing and potential dangers while at the scene
- How media personnel can operate safely while at the scene
- How media personnel can properly communicate with Emergency Response personnel at the scene
- How to safely escape when the situation dictates
News gathering crews need to be aware that they could become a part of the story if not properly trained in how to recognize and avoid hazards in the field. These include
physical hazards such as downed power lines, fallen tree limbs, mud slides, sink holes, and hazards posed by animal populations; and other hazards related to the incident itself, such as a tornado, earthquake or chemical spills.
Hazards and risks may also include secondary devices that activate once emergency agencies and media personnel have arrived are designed to target these groups, thereby delaying aid to those affected by the initial attack and causing more harm (potentially on live TV) to those reporting the story.
Presented as a 2-Hour Management Awareness, 4-Hour Field Personnel Training (or other styles that may fit your needs) this course will provide news crews with the decision making tools necessary to reduce their potential of becoming a part of the story. Guidelines on how to deal with the incident as well as the aftermath are discussed. Information is provided on other tools such as informational resources, pre-planning, the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), and participation in local first responder drills.
Customized modules or variation of this course are also available.
