The goal of this one day course is to familiarize law enforcement, first responders, and other interested parties with the general
security environment of the maritime transportation system. The course will examine the regulatory framework and requirements
that are currently in place in an important component of the port stakeholder community: maritime facilities. The role of company
and vessel security officer will also be examined.
Students will leave the course with a greater awareness of the security measures and training mandated for maritime facilities and personnel employed in those facilities. Recent developments
such as the Transportation Worker Identify Credential (TWIC) program and SAFE Port Act will be discussed. Public safety personnel in jurisdictions with waterways navigable by
large vessels or tug/barge combinations will particularly benefit from this class, and will be better able to respond to emergency situations in maritime facilities.
Topics include:
- US and state transportation system
- Regulatory framework – laws, codes, and regulations
- Threats to maritime security
- Security measures in place in port facilities
- The facility security officer
- Maritime initiatives that will affect public safety
